The Despot's Decay

- Steve Beisner

The Greatest Ever

categories: arts, general

The inevitable, unwelcomed, conspiracy theories ooze

from the muck of his stream of consciousness.

The dictator knows the cursed symptoms have come at last,

his latent syphilis, advancing slowly, is now manifest.

His doctors whisper about what lies ahead,

but befuddled thoughts and a syphilitic gait becloud his emotions.

His dim realizations might tempt him to quit,

but no, he is perfect; all else is fake, all lies.

Misjudging bad as good, hideous as beautiful,

he does not see that his muddle is overripe and foul.

Audiences sour and fade, finally disappearing into hazy memory.

Dimly he sees that he is the fool, but the greatest fool ever.
