If you had an introductory course in differential calculus in high school you may remember the concept of a "derivative": the first derivative of the location or position of a thing is the speed of the thing, that is, the rate of change of the thing's location.
The second derivative is the rate of change of the first derivative, i.e. the acceleration. The third defivative is the rate of change of the acceleration, also called the jerk. And so on.
Almost everyone has an intuitive feel for position, speed, and acceleration, but for some reason we often leave that intuition at the door when analyzing important real world phenomena. Even experts do this.
You might want to consider this when listening to experts in the stock market,
politics, economic trends, and anything that is changing over time.

Why No One Understands
my two cents (sans derivative) is that the tulip mania aspect of what we are seeing is driven by competitive capitalism (in bed with moneylenders). But underneath it all, the greatest tool yet in human culture is unfolding here, of potentially vast economic... and moreso, cultural... value...(assuming that the damned fools on stage today do not entirely destabilize every aspect of human society). And, eventually, it will be like owning a railroad (ask Warren Buffett about that).
